Also called Volunteers/Peer Educators, the YEDI Skillz Coaches are the driving force behind the expanding Grassroot Soccer program. YEDI accepts applications for coaches and interviews the applicants to test general knowledge, confidence, leadership abilities, and individual assessments for working with children and teaching sensitive health topics. YEDI has already trained more than 400 coaches who have inspired, empowered and educated over 60,000 Nigerian youths with critical life skills and up-to-date information to prevent HIV/AIDS, malaria, STIs, etc. as well as equipped them with relevant information to avoid risky behaviour, live healthy, and reach their goals faster.
The Skillz Naija Coaches deliver the Grassroot Soccer's Skillz Naija curriculum which focuses on building basic life skills that help children between the ages of 11-16 adopt healthy behaviours and live risk free by creating a simple but powerful connection between soccer and life skills. The program helps young people have relevant and important discussions about life, take small steps to achieve their goals, stay strong when faced with challenges and protect themselves and others from diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria.
The Skillz Girl Coaches are our coumminity role models who are trained to deliver the Skillz Girl Naija/Skillz Girl Amplified curricullum. A girls-targeted intervention, Skillz Girl combines an activities-based HIV prevention and life skills curriculum with fair-play soccer and peer-led community outreach activities. Skillz Girl creates a safe space for adolescent girls (between ages 13 and 19) to play non-competitive soccer, take action in their community, and have vital conversations about HIV/AIDS and Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH). Participants of the Skillz Girl behavioural change communication program who are mentored by thoroughly-trained female peer educators are also provided access to voluntary and free HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) after every intervention with a referral system to cater for those requiring treatment and further counselling.
